Thoughts on International Noise Awareness Day
International Noise Awareness Day (INAD) is a date of global significance celebrated on the last Wednesday of April each year. The main objective of this commemoration is to raise awareness of the impact of noise on health and quality of life.
As it is framed in an environmental context, it seeks to promote understanding and recognition that noise is not just a temporary nuisance, but a problem that can have serious long-term consequences.
Established by The Center for Hearing and Communication in New York, International Noise Awareness Day aims to make people aware of the negative effects that noise can have, especially in urban environments, offices and other public spaces.
Since 2006, the Ministry of Environment has celebrated this day in several countries, highlighting the importance of mitigating the effects of noise pollution in our daily lives.
Impacts of noise on people's health
Constant exposure to high levels of noise can trigger significant disturbances in people’s health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned about the risks associated with environmental noise, pointing out that prolonged exposure to intense sounds can affect both our physical and emotional health. Among the most common effects are increased stress levels, insomnia, anxiety disorders and even cardiovascular disease.
In addition, people who work or live in noisy environments may experience difficulties in concentration, productivity and general well-being. In this context, noise becomes not only a nuisance, but also a factor that impairs quality of life. This has led to an increased awareness of the importance of treating spaces acoustically, especially in offices, coworkings, auditoriums and other enclosed public places where noise can directly interfere with people’s performance and health.
Fortunately, there is now a growing awareness of the need to address acoustic treatment in different types of spaces. It is recognised that acoustic solutions are not only needed in industrial environments or in specific areas of constant noise, but also in modern offices, meeting rooms, educational facilities and other spaces where sound quality can influence people’s well-being.
Acoustic solutions: How to achieve an acoustically efficient space
For a space to be acoustically effective, proper design and treatment is essential. Acoustic solutions vary depending on the type of environment, but include elements such as acoustic panels, acoustic booths and absorbent materials that reduce echo and minimise sound reverberation, reducing noise levels.
In offices and coworking spaces, for example, acoustic panels can be installed on walls and ceilings to reduce sound dispersion and allow workers to concentrate on their tasks without being interrupted by disturbing noise. The installation of acoustic booths is also an excellent option to create noise-free spaces for meetings or calls, improving employee concentration.
In auditoriums and conference rooms, the acoustic design must ensure that sound propagates homogeneously, avoiding echoes or distortions. The use of specific materials, such as wood, fabrics and other absorbent elements, is key to creating an environment where the sound quality is appropriate for the acoustics of the space.
It is important to note that, beyond surface treatments, architectural design and choice of building materials also play a key role in reducing noise pollution. Today, many office buildings and public buildings include integrated acoustic design from the planning stage to ensure that the space is efficient and comfortable.
Transforming the future with acoustically efficient spaces
International Noise Awareness Day invites us to reflect on how noise affects our lives and the urgent need to take action to mitigate its effects. As awareness of acoustic issues increases, so do innovative acoustic solutions to improve the environments in which we live and work. The integration of appropriate acoustic treatments is a key investment in promoting health, concentration and general well-being.
At Mirplay Acoustics we believe that noise is not only a temporary nuisance, but also has long-term effects on our quality of life. Therefore, commemorating this day is a wake-up call for all of us to be part of the solution and take concrete actions to create healthier and more pleasant spaces.
