Echo vs. Reverberation: differences and their impact on a space

When we talk about acoustics, two terms that come up frequently are echo and reverberation. Although both relate to the way sound is reflected in a space, they are distinct phenomena that influence our experience of sound in different ways.

What is the echo?

Echo is the clear and distinguishable repetition of a sound that occurs when a sound wave reflects off a distant surface and returns to the listener after sufficient time to be perceived as a second, separate sound.

  • Occurs when the reflection takes more than 50-100 milliseconds to return to the listener.

  • It is perceived as a clear and separate ‘bounce’ from the original sound.

  • It is common in very large spaces or spaces with highly reflective and distant surfaces, such as mountains, large empty halls or tunnels.

    Practical example: Shouting into a mountain and hearing the clear repetition of your voice.

What is reverberation?

Reverberation is the sum of multiple sound reflections occurring in an enclosed space, where sound waves bounce off walls, ceilings and objects in close proximity and reach the ear with so little delay that they are perceived as a single prolonged sound.

How to control echo and reverberation?

To reduce echo, it is essential to minimise the presence of hard, reflective surfaces, especially those that are far apart, as they make it easier for sound to bounce back clearly and persistently. It is also advisable to avoid large voids or open spaces without elements that interrupt the sound path.


On the other hand, controlling reverberation requires a different strategy. In this case, absorbent materials – such as acoustic panels, thick carpets, heavy curtains or upholstered furniture – are used to help reduce the amount of reflected sound waves in the room. In addition, the design of the geometry of the space, incorporating irregular surfaces or elements that disperse sound, is key to achieving balanced and comfortable acoustics.
